Over the years, a lot of changes have been made. Changes can be in evolutions, norms,
to anything but one that definitely needs to talk is changes in appearance. There are numerous
of reasons why people, mostly women have changed their appearances and all of those have
one thing in common; influence. In an article by Meredith Levande called Women, Pop Music,
and Pornography, there are many reasons to why women are influenced to dress differently and
change their appearances as generation changes.

The main reason that influenced women to change appearance is media. It has grown
into a big part of everyone’s everyday life. Whether it is to dress like dolls or show skins, it
is consider normal to dress in certain way as long as they blend in with the crowd. Pop music
is playing a big role in all of this because it is luring fans to dress as their favorite pop star
singer and the way it is heading, there are less clothing and more skins. As Meredith Levande
mentioned, “… female musicians drastically changed from Sarah McLachlan to Sporty Spice
to Britney Spears.” (Levande, 293) Meaning the appearances changed from clothing to some
clothing to less clothing.

Levande also believes that media is also portraying pornography as it is growing.
Some included examples were shows such as MTV, BET, etc. will have late night shows with
uncensored music videos. There are also TV stations such as having late night adult shows such
as “Girls Gone Wild”, TMZ, and VH1 provided by DIRECTV, Comcast, etc. Not only that, there
are commercials that media provides for the public to be aware of pornography. Levande stated
towards a Pepsi commercial ad, “Pink, Beyoncé, and Britney beat the imperialistic emperor, they
reinforce the myth that power is attained when one’s body is on display.” (Levande, 302)

Overall, media has made a lot of changes towards appearances. It might just be
advertisements for businesses to market their “brands” but on the other side, it is harming
people like teens and women to indulge their body. Mostly, it is enforcing everyone to see that
pornography is normal but really, it is not.
